Doesn't know the sounds of the letters
Separating the spoken word “cat” into three distinct phonemes, and, requires phonemic awareness. This is a form of phonological awareness or PHONICS!
Lacks the skill to sound out unfamiliar words
Difficulty reading due to problems identifying speech sounds and learning how they relate to letters and words (decoding) is a form of DYSLEXIA.
Oral reading is choppy rather than fluent and smooth
In order to read with expression, the student must be able to read words efficiently and break the text into meaningful syntactic and semantic units. This is called PROSODY.
Displays poor reading comprehension
A reading disorder that occurs when a person has trouble reading words or understanding what they just read. This is sometimes called HYPERPLEXIA.
Guesses at words instead of sounding them out
A hit or miss technique when a child chooses to read whole words by sight memory, rather than using phonics. This is called OPTILEXIA.
Resists reading
A tendacy for children to avoid what they aren’t skilled at. This is called READING AVOIDANCE.
Skips small words such as 'a', 'the', 'to', 'were', and 'from.'
As a child reads, their eyes jump forward to the next word or phrase, and these are function words that a child cannot visualize. Since the sentence can still be comprehended without them, the words are easily skimmed over (tracking). This can be attributed to DYSLEXIA, DECODING OR VISION problems.
